How Our Work Supports the Sustainable Development Goals
The Outdoor & Ecological Learning programs in School District 47 are committed to action around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). While our work directly focuses on Goals 4, 8, 12, 13, 14,15 and 17 we are also working indirectly on every other goal.
While this list is not nearly exhaustive, below are some specific examples of how we are acting:
All our programs align with SDG 4 and 12 which focus on education for global citizenship and sustainable lifestyles.
We create and deliver curriculum for sustainable development and climate change (SDG 13).
We are actively engaged with SDG 8 as we train, mentor, educate and employ youth in the environmental sector.
We provide training (ie. Streamkeepers) and develop projects (ie. Marine Debris Project) which support SDG 14 & 15. Students act to protect, restore and conserve terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and reduce marine pollution.
Our provincially run Green Careers initiative (offered as CLE10 & CLC12) work to give students a foundation in systems thinking using the SDG framework. A fundamental aspect of the course is the completion of a Collaborative Action Project, where students follow their passions (aligned with the SDGs), while connecting with community organizations in their local area. This encouragement of effective partnerships supports SDG 17.
