Green Career Courses

Career Life Education 10 & Career Life Connections 12

Virtually every sector around the world is shifting towards the Green Economy. Similar to the standard Career Life courses, this offering uses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for student learning. The course will be offered in a mixed delivery context; students will be expected to complete modules independently as well as with small groups. There will be “touch points” when the entire cohort comes together. These interactive online workshops will have a focus on student voice and participation, and feature young professionals in sustainability related career paths. The course may also include two multi-day learning retreats, one at the semester beginning and one at the semester end. The course is open to students from across BC which will ensure a diverse and exciting learning environment and networking opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m not part of SD47, can I still take this course?

Yes, both CLE10 & CLC12 can be taken by any student in BC. The more diversity of students across the province the better!

How many credits is the course worth?

Each course is worth the regular 4 credits. Students must register for the course offered at their grade level.

Do the courses fulfill the graduation requirements?

Yes, CLE 10 and CLC 12 are both a compulsory part of the BC Graduation Program. We are embracing the opportunity to deliver the curriculum in a way that is relevant to learners and an evolving green economy.

What does ‘mixed delivery’ mean?

Key Elements of the framework:

  1. Students will be expected to chart their own progress

  2. Assignments will be done independently (ie. Resumes, budgets, etc)

  3. Students will be encouraged to work on projects in small regional groups with local partner organizations.

  4. There will be bi-monthly online “touch- points”  when the entire cohort from around the province comes together. These interactive online workshops will have a focus on student voice and participation, and will feature guest speakers in sustainability professions.

  5. There will be multi-day learning retreats, one at the semester beginning and one at the semester end.

  6. There will be regional opportunities to attend events (ie. Leadership Clinics with Metro Vancouver)

Around how many hours a week will the course require?

This will vary significantly depending on projects, workshops, community engagement etc but should average out to 2-6 hours per week.

Is the course during regular classroom hours?

Independent and small group work can be done at a time that fits your schedule. “Touch-points” will be scheduled from 4-5:30 every two weeks (currently scheduled for Tuesdays).

What will the ‘Learning Retreats’ look like?

The Learning Retreats will be an opportunity to bring the entire cohort together for 3-days of workshops and group development activities. This will allow the group to get to know each other in-person before working together in a remote capacity. We are proposing two Learning Retreats, one held in Powell River and the other in Metro Vancouver. They will be held over the weekend from Friday-Monday.

When will the course begin and end?

The course will start at the beginning of September and run until the end of January.

DO grade 10 and grade 12 participate in the same cohort?

Yes, we anticipate much of the work do be done in the same cohort with some grade level differentiation by utilizing breakout rooms and separate sessions as well. Both grade levels will likely be invited to the same weekend sessions.
